Roma Portraits
Roma Portraits was led by Integratio Foundation (www.integratio.ro), under the financing of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), and counted with the participation of members of SoSIM and other related institutions.
The project aims to map and to reduce the cultural invisibility of the cohabitation of Roma and non-Roma people in the region of Cristuru Secuiesc, Romania, where the Roma make up around a quarter of the population. In comparison to other regions of Székely Land, where pogroms against Roma have taken place, coexistence in the Cristuru Secuiesc area is relatively peaceful. However, while institutions are common and mixed marriages are not uncommon, exclusion continues to be present. In the face of such exclusion, people have adopted different approaches, ranging from the preservation of their Roma identity to integration into the majority, but nearly all of them have dual Roma-Hungarian heritage and suffer from lack of recognition.
The principal academic and cultural product resulting from this project is a documentary film entitled Better find it out from me – Six portraits of Roma from the region of Cristuru Secuiesc (Mandar te Janen – Șo rromano portreto andar e Kristuro), directed by Miska Lakatos, and the organization of the photo exhibition Unmasked, portraying the work of Tamás Márkos. The film, photo exhibition, and other textual material have been made available online: www.romaportrek.integratio.ro.
