Memory of Trauma
Memory of Trauma was led by Integratio Foundation, under the financing of Romania’s National Cultural Fund Administration (Administrația Fondului Cultural Național – AFCN), and counted with the participation of members of SoSIM and other related institutions.
In recent decades, in Romania, and especially in the historical Transylvanian region of Székely Land, there have been recurrent cases in which Roma communities have been expelled, their houses have been burned down, or they have been forcibly displaced as a consequence of police repression. This project consists of the production of a documentary film and an informative publication about the collective memory of these violent anti-Roma events particularly in Harghita County. This academic and cultural production informs and analyses the phenomenon of collective aggression against Roma people in Székely Land, specifically the pogrom-type of attacks committed against them, and the historical and social context in which this phenomenon has repeatedly unfolded.
The aim of the Memory of Trauma project is to examine how violent aggression has become part of the social relations at the local and regional levels – how exclusion and humiliation have become accepted practices in the name of “public order” and “community self-protection”. The film and other textual material have been made available online at: emlekezet.integratio.ro
