About Us

The Romanian Society for Intercultural and Migration Studies (SoSIM) was established in 2024 to meet the new challenges emerging from Romania’s transformation into a transnational contact zone, where diverging perspectives of development, changing labour relations, and intensifying human mobility actively interact, intersect, and grapple with each other. As Romania becomes a destination country for third-country nationals, particularly from Asia, finding a more complex and human approach to human mobility has become an urgent matter to us. In line with this, we look for a third way of addressing and transcending the confrontation between utilitarian and culturalist views around development, labour, and migration; the persistence of internal inequalities in class, socio-geographic, ethnic, racial, and gender terms; and the hierarchical structuring of immigration under the prerequisites of global racial capitalism. At SoSIM we commit to filling the intellectual gaps and mitigating the injustices and violences that emerge in this process.

To achieve this, we undertake rigorous, creative, and action-based research, with a strong focus on tangible outcomes. We address issues around immigration, racism, chauvinism and bigotry, gender inequality, and their intersection, through our academic publications; opinion polls, focus groups and interviews; topic-specific events; awareness campaigns; promotion of intercultural education; public-policy analysis; and production of cultural products such as film, photography, theatre, and literature in relation to the life stories of minorities. In the future, we also plan on establishing an online date-base for the digitalization of primary sources and an online library for secondary sources, organising training sessions for members and collaborators of the association, and interinstitutional collaborations and partnerships.
